Armenian singer and actor Suren Poghosyan has been officially selected to represent Armenia at the prestigious New Wave 2025 international music competition in Kazan, according to a recent interview with Bravo.am.
Poghosyan shared that he views himself as a competitive performer who thrives in musical challenges. He described his selection as a significant honor, noting that of 6,000 applicants, only 60 were accepted to participate—and just 13 made it to the finals as national representatives.
During the first day of the competition, Poghosyan plans to perform a well-known Russian song that was originally popularized by an Armenian artist. On the second and third days, he will debut new songs written specifically for New Wave: “Ընկեր Իմ” (“My Friend”), penned by Eva Voskanian, and an upbeat track titled “Bang-Bang”, composed by Swedish songwriters.
Poghosyan expressed particular pride in performing “Ընկեր Իմ”, highlighting its emotional resonance and style. He emphasized his intent to showcase diversity in his performances—differing in both mood and musical genre. “It’s important for an artist to be versatile,” he said.
Rehearsals began on August 9 and have been intensive, running from early mornings well into the night—sometimes past 11 PM. Poghosyan described the process as “heavy and unusual,” pointing out that the presence of peers and continuous feedback—ranging from critiques to encouragement—has made the experience even more rigorous.
Addressing his level of fame within Armenia, Poghosyan pushed back on suggestions that his recognition was limited. “A performer’s success here isn’t about fame—it’s how you handle your performance under pressure and connect with the audience,” he stated, underscoring the importance of stage presence over public visibility.
New Wave 2025’s main rounds are scheduled for August 22, 23, and 24.
